TORONTO, ON – Some of Canada’s funniest people (or those that think they are the funniest) will descend on Toronto tomorrow for the next week to compete for a $25,000 cash prize and a chance at comic stardom. One talented comic could help subsidize his late night lifestyle and laugh all the way to the bank.
Producers from some of the top comedy television shows such as Chelsea Lately, the Conan O’Brien Show and from the Just For Laughs Festival will be judging which comedian is Canada’s funniest at the six annual Yuk Yuk’s Great Canadian Laugh Off. This year’s event runs from April 22 to May 1, 2011, and it is the first time that the competition is open only to Canadians who have the gift of the guffaw. Each has a chance for national television exposure at the finals. The final competition will be taped for a comedy special on Sunday, May 1 for CTV’s Comedy Network.
Starting on Friday, April 22, 64 comedians will come to Toronto to compete on the big stage. 51 performers were selected by random computer draw, while the remaining 13 are winners from local Laugh Off competitions held at Yuk Yuk’s comedy clubs from coast to coast. Contestants will perform daily, with two winners being selected from each show to compete in the semifinals on Fri April 29 and 30th where the final 8 comics will be selected. These comics will swap fists of funny and lashes of laughter, slugging it out for the CDN $25,000 grand prize.

Whether a working comic is hoping for a bail out or just wants to bid farewell to the sidewalks of Toronto – anyone has a chance to win from amateurs to professionals. Stars who got their start at Yuk Yuk’s include: Jim Carrey, Mike Moranis, Russell Peters and Norm MacDonald just to name a few.
Yuk Yuk’s Great Canadian Laugh Off is Canada’s biggest open comedy competition, with Canada’s largest comedy prize. There are two categories for contestants to enter. Previous winners have received their own Comedy Now specials, thanks in part to the exposure they received from the Laugh Off.
The contestants have been selected randomly through an online draw and the 2011 Yuk Yuk’s Laugh Off reserves 13 spots for winners of Local Laugh Offs held at Yuk Yuk’s clubs. Local Laugh Offs began earlier this year. The final show will be taped and aired on The Comedy Network later in 2011. This year’s Great Canadian Laugh Off is sponsored by Via Rail Canada, Metro News, Town Inn and Suites and The Comedy Network.

Bruce Hills is the Chief Operating Officer for Just For Laughs: The Montreal International Comedy Festival, the world’s largest and most prestigious comedy event taking place every July in Montreal and with new additions to the Festival circuit in Toronto and Chicago debuting in June 2009. She first joined Conan in New York in 2007 at Late Night With Conan O’Brien. She moved to Los Angeles in 2009 to work on The Tonight Show With Conan O’Brien and now continues to work with him on his newest show Conan. Always one to look at life from the lighter side, Sam Mauro is going to put his comedic talents to the test in next week’s Yuk Yuk’s Great Canadian Laugh Off challenge.
Mauro is one of 64 amateur contestants looking to earn the winner-take-all $25,000 first-place prize and also get some exposure from the various television executives who have been selected to be judges for the competition.
Creative director and owner of Georgetown-based Twisted Pencil Web & Design, Mauro has been known to entertain friends with some of his humour at parties and he’s had an itch to try out his material in a more formal setting since getting his first taste of standup comedy some 30 years ago.
A student at Sheridan College in Oakville, Mauro took the stage in front of about 1,000 people and “rocked the house” in a half-hour set that was supposed to last for 7-10 minutes.
“At that time, I really wanted to see where I could go with standup but I had to make a decision on whether to do that or go into the field I studied for, and I chose the latter,” he said.
“I just turned 50 last Wednesday and I’m getting tired of the marketing business, chasing people for money all the time. Life is too serious and I like to take a comical approach. This is a great opportunity for me to see where I stand so I won’t be wondering if I would’ve, could’ve, should’ve. I just want to get myself in front of the right people and even if I don’t win it’s a high-profile show to get noticed.”
A good part of his material draws on his upbringing in a traditional Italian household in Port Credit, or as Mauro refers to it— “Porto Credito”— along with some impersonations.
The Laugh Off contest begins tomorrow (Friday) and runs until May 1, when the remaining eight finalists will perform routines that are scheduled to appear on The Comedy Network.
Mauro has also patented a unique hockey equipment bag and is partnering with local native and former NHLer Adam Bennett in the venture.

Michael Cox is the Talent Executive for the late night talk-show Chelsea Lately on E! Entertainment where he books and produces the panel of comedians. Prior to that, he spent three seasons on The Showbiz Show with David Spade for Comedy Central and helped launch The Megan Mullally Show for NBC/Universal. Michael’s love for comedy began when he assisted the talent booker for the Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon after which he spent three years in the comedy department at The Agency for the Performing Arts in Los Angeles. Michael went on to scout talent for the HBO U.S. Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen, CO. Michael was born and raised in Vancouver, B.C and before settling in Los Angeles, graduated from Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario.
