Catching Up With Mark Little - The 2009 YYLO $25,000 Winner

Monday, February 22nd, 2010

mark-little

Last week, we caught up with Mark Little, winner of the $25,000 grand prize in the 2009 Yuk Yuk’s Great Canadian Laugh Off, to see what he’s been doing with all that cash.

YYLO: How has the Yuk Yuk’s Great Canadian Laugh Off changed your life?

ML:It’s a lot easier to focus on writing and performing my own as-yet-unprofitable material with $25,000 in the bank, so that’s been the main change: financial peace of mind. Temporarily. I guess it’s similar to how musicians/artists/writers must feel when they get government grants. Yuk Yuk’s is my Canadian Government. Make what you will of that analogy.

YYLO: What have you been up to since your big win last year?

ML:So, so much. My main focus has always been sketch comedy, and in the last year my sketch group Picnicface worked with Mark McKinney on developing a sketch series for the Comedy Network. It’s currently in the second stage of development, which, if I know anything about the Canadian TV industry, means it should go to air sometime between 2011 and never. We also wrote a book of lies about Canada for Harper Collins. They have the first draft; we’ll see if they publish it. We’re marketing it as a nice Christmas present for people who like to be lied to.

The most exciting thing is a feature-length movie script that Andrew Bush, Scott Vrooman and I wrote over the last year called Roller Town. We all had to learn how to roller skate for the trailer we shot. That’s the last major thing I did after winning the Laugh Off: buy rollerskates.

YYLO: How did you get into comedy?

ML: I did improv before anything. I got into it in high school through the Canadian Improv Games, which is this amazing organization that spans the country. Nothing glib to add to that, Mark? No, I’m good.

YYLO: Have you always been funny?

ML: I always made my friends laugh, but I’d get intimidated by the real class clowns with their spot-on velociraptor impressions. I think there’s an O.C. episode about that. I remember watching it and thinking, “You’ve captured my life again, O.C.”

YYLO: Where do you find your comedic inspiration?

ML:Other comedians get me real inspired, especially the balls-out original ones. Paul F. Tompkins blows my mind. That whole Comedy Death Ray crowd. Andy Daly. And sitcoms. Eastbound and Down, Seinfeld (still), Curb Your Enthusiasm, Peep Show. Especially Peep Show. Oh, and certain novelists, like the late David Foster Wallace. As for the jokes/sketches I write, the direct inspiration usually comes from things that happen to me — not things I do so much as things that are done to me. I don’t live life in any sort of active sense.

YYLO: If you were a fruit, what type of fruit would you be and why?

ML: I’d be a tomato. People would say, “I thought you were a vegetable…” and I’d be like, “Oh, did you?”

YYLO: What advice would you give to the contestants in this year’s laugh off?

ML:Advice? I don’t know. The judges are totally different in the early rounds compared to the finals. So… don’t get too down if you’re getting low marks from radio DJs? Nothing against radio DJs, of course. (Of course.)

I remember a friend told me that certain comics had an advantage in last year’s competition because they’d peppered their sets with a variety of judge-pleasing material: political bits, relationship bits, etc. Maybe that’s a good tactic, but all my stuff was pretty one-track and I did alright. So I guess my advice is don’t worry about tailoring your set to please the judges — be they radio DJs or, you know, not radio DJs.

ML: In response to your unasked eighth question: Big Mama’s House.

Funniest of the funny: announcing the finalists

Saturday, May 2nd, 2009

Direct from LA, where he now lives, Toronto funny-man Michael Gelbart kept the audience laughing with his ‘classics’ as they watched 16 of the competition’s funniest comics face off for eight spots in the finals. After two hilarious shows and stellar performances and a very close tally, here’s the line-up moving on Sunday night’s finals - and The Comedy Network special.

Show 1: Cedric Newman, Mark Little, John Ki, Chuck Byrn.

Show 2: Mark Forward, Trixx, Ray Garrett, Graham Chittenden

Congratulations to all the comics for bringing the house down with laughs.  Can’t wait for the finals tomorrow.

Special thanks to our judges for both shows… David Reuben (Thecomedygreenroom.com), Darrin Pfeiffer (102.1 The Edge), Karina Lemke (Host of Rich Bride, Poor Bride and Petal Pushers), Rudy Blair (680 News), and Farley Flex (Judge on Canadian Idol).

Whew!

Saturday, May 2nd, 2009

Was it ever a spectacular final round of contestants last night. People came from all across the Globe to compete, but only four talented competitors could move on. The fabulously funny competitors from the first show were Michelle Henderson from Texas and Toronto’s own Mark Forward.

The second show proved to be another batch of stiff competition, but it was London (England’s) Imran Yusof and Jeff Elliot who prevailed.

Right now, the semi final competition is taking place to determine who the eight finalists will be for tomorrow night’s show. Stay tuned for another post about our final show competitors.

Near international incident

Saturday, May 2nd, 2009

It’s not what you think though. The word on the street is that Christopher James from Detroit and Zaid Barakati who came all the way from Jordan are BFFs (best friends forever.) We don’t want to get all mushy, but isn’t it nice how laughter brings us all together? Or is it the best medicine?

Well anyway, tonight’s emcee, Tony Krolo, had the crowd rolling in their seats with his straight face and dry, dry humour, but the contestants still shone through. We had competitors spanning the globe from the Middle East to London, England, to the far away land of Bartlesville, Oklahoma.

The winners from the first show had tough competition from Jordan’s Zaid Barakati and the comic theatrics of Tyler Hawkins, but it was Michelle Henderson from Texas and Toronto’s own Mark Forward who pulled through.

We’d like to extend a special thanks to our judges for tonight: David Reuben Comedy Green Room, Trey Anthony from Da Kink in My Hair, Kelly G from Live with Kelly G and Ed Reiberg: lawyer.

On to the second show. It’s a packed house this time around…lots of Americans are in the audience judging from the Aeropostale shirts speckled throughout the crowd. We’d also like to thank the new judges for this set, Abdul Nazarali and Bobby Cole, both from AMP Talent, along with David Reuben and Kelly G.

There were laughs all around, starting from Mike MacGregor, the love child of the Hell’s Angels and Weird Al Yankovic, all the way to the unconventional but hilarious humour of Andrew Iwanyk from Edmonton. However, Canada’s Jeff Elliott and London’s Imran Yusuf came out on top.

That’s it for tonight! Keep on yukkin’ ’till the next show tomorrow night.

My abs hurt from laughing

Friday, May 1st, 2009

Last night’s show was full of tough comedy competitors, but it was Marty Grimes and Bryan Hatt who stole the show. Click on the videos below from some clips from their performances.

Tonight there will be another two great Laugh Off shows at 7:30 and 10:30 PM. Toronto’s own regional Laugh Off winner, Mark Forward, is competing in the 7:30 PM show. Will he be able to take on tough transnational and international competitors?

If you’re interested in seeing the best of the best, call 416-967-6425 to book a reservation for the grand finale which is happening at 8 PM on Sunday night. Yuk Yuk’s founder and CEO Mark Breslin will emcee the show as the final eight joke-battle for comedy supremacy.

Another rainy night…

Friday, May 1st, 2009

…but not at Yuk Yuk’s during the Laugh Off. Not a wet person in the house, can’t promise about the seats though. With another installment of the Laugh Off complete, comics from Massachusetts, California, Alabama, St. John’s, Toronto and South Africa, made sure that everyone was laughing throughout the night.

That feat was also possible due to the MC for the evening, Tony Krolo, who kept the momentum going between comedians.

After the rain stopped and the dust settled, there were only two comedians moving on into the semis this coming Saturday….

…Congrats to Toronto’s own Bryan Hatt and, all the way from San Francisco, California, Marty Grimes.

We’d also like to thank the judges; Anne Hines (Metro Toronto), Chantal LeBlanc (Life Force TV), Jeff Marshall (Jeff Marshall Casting), and Norwayne Anderson (NAM Talent)

Lucky Laugh Off contestant Cedric Newman was featured in a second Mississauga news article now that he’s made it to the semi final round and Toronto resident Chuck Byrn got written up in the Toronto Community News.

We didn’t forget about Trixx and Graham Chittenden’s performances from last Sunday night. See below for some video clips of their routines. Trixx was also recently featured in an article from Vaughn Today.

The comedy world is buzzing about the semi final shows that are happening this Saturday at 7:30 PM and 10:30 PM. Warriors of laughter will battle for the prize of 25 thousand dollars and the glory of the title: Yuk Yuk’s 2009 Laugh Off champion.

Breaking the mold

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

After four shows of Canadian comedians dominating and earning spots in Saturday’s semi’s, one comic all the way from St. Louis has come out swinging and earned his spot.

Congratulations to Toronto’s-own John Ki, and Ray Garrett, hailing from the U.S. They will both be a force come Saturday night.

We’d also like to thank the judges for the evening…Kelly G, Mona (Lady Luck Entertainment) and Sandy Duarte & Jonathan Baldock (thatchannel.com)

Geeky comics move to semis

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

Show 4 and the competition continues with performers from Jersey, London (Ontario), Detroit, Kitchener, Toronto and Philly, home of tonight’s MC, Tyrone Jamison.

The show was a mix of amateurs and pros. But two geeky, yet cheeky comics stole the show and took a second bow when Ben Mulroney announced they were moving to the semifinals:  Allyson Smith and Mark Little.

Special thanks to our judges, CTV’s Ben Mulroney, Toronto Sun’s Jim Slotek, Carlos Hicks, Carlos Hicks Talent Management and Jeff Marshall, Jeff Marshall Casting.

Chittenden and Trixx yuk their way to the semis

Sunday, April 26th, 2009

Sleepy Sunday in Toronto, but not at Yuk Yuk’s. The club was packed. MC Eddie Della Siepe got the audience laughing right away and introduced the first act, Dana Alexander, who started the evening off with a strong set.

But the room rocked when Philadelphia’s Tyrone Jamison took the stage. He faced tough competition from Uganda’s Sir Sidney, Canada’s Graham Chittenden and the Vaughan Yuk Yuk’s Laugh Off winner, Trixx.

And now give it up for tonight’s winners, Graham Chittenden and Trixx who move onto the semifinals.

Special thanks to tonight’s judges: Eric Grant, Driven magazine, KellyG, Chantel Leblanc, Lifeforce Entertainment and Mark Moyes, Driven magazine.  They made some tough calls - maybe they should try out for the NHL.

We’ll be back on Tuesday with lots more comedians.  Goodnight!

First funny four fast-forward to (semi)finals

Saturday, April 25th, 2009

Saturday night at Yuk Yuks in Toronto and the crowd was buzzing when MC Dylan Mandlsohn took the stage. The early show had tough competition with great sets by Christina Walkinshaw and Johnny Munro. But when the votes were tallied only the two funniest comics yukked their way to the semifinals next weekend.

Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome: Andrea Jensen and Cedric Newman!

The second show had a few ‘less practised’ comics and the winners - Vince Ucci and Chuck Byrn - had sets that left the crowd rolling in the aisles. Chuck Byrn is a Yuk Yuk’s regular, but Vince, who hails from Elliott Lake and is an amateur comic, was the surprise victory of the evening.

More Laugh Off news

Friday, April 24th, 2009

The latest Laugh Off contestant to appear in the news is Johnny Munro, who was featured in The Record from Kitchener. Johnny is the only child of Lily Oddie Munro, a provincial cabinet minister working under David Peterson. His father was the late John Munro, a federal cabinet minister who worked under Pierre Trudeau. Johnny has taken a decidedly different path from his parents.

Laugh Off, competitors in the news

Thursday, April 23rd, 2009

As the Laugh Off approaches, stories have been popping up around the GTA in support of regional competitors.

The Mississauga News ran an article last Thursday about local randomly drawn contestant Cedric Newman who has competed in previous years’ Laugh Offs after winning the regional Mississauga contest. Newman explains that the contest is about more than just winning the grand prize: it’s about exposure.

Cedric Newman

The Barrie examiner ran a story on Monday featuring Mark Casey, a Barrie police officer who will compete in this year’s contest. The former class clown and ongoing jokester carries notebooks around with him in case inspiration strikes. Casey practices comedy as a hobby and enjoys the reaction he gets when he is on stage.

Listings for the Laugh Off have been included in the Globe and Mail, Now Magazine, Craigslist, BlogTO, Yahoo and Dreamstations. Have a look in Metro to win a possible Yuk Yuk’s contest and watch out for a SUN TV CANOE Live segment from inside Yuk Yuk’s today at 5:30 PM.

Keep checking back here at the Laugh Off news room for more contest updates.

Laugh Off judge profile: Ben Mulroney

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009

Watch for him at Yuk Yuk’s on Tuesday, April 28th at 8 PM

Claiming he can’t live without his PVR, Ben Mulroney considers himself a pretty lucky guy, “I love movies, television and music, so as the host of a daily entertainment show, I can say this is my dream job.”

As host of eTalk, Mulroney delivers entertainment news from the studio in Toronto, but also travels the world to interview stars and reports from red carpet events, including the Oscars, Golden Globes and the JUNO Awards.

Born in Montréal, Mulroney got his start as the Quebec City correspondent for talktv’s The Chatroom, where he beamed in weekly via Webcam to rant and rave about television. He became a co-host on the interactive show in July 2001 then moved to a new role of entertainment reporter for CTV’s Canada AM in October 2001.

Off-camera, Mulroney is the national ambassador for UNICEF Canada. He also hosts the successful Canadian Idol on CTV, which just wrapped its sixth season.

As the son of former Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney, it was assumed that Ben’s life would head in the direction of politics. Even with a law degree from Laval University and a history degree from Duke University, Ben found his calling in show business. He continues to draw inspiration from others who bear the Mulroney name.
